GTA 6 File Size: What's Known and How Much Space to Free

By Eren ŞimşirPublished

Rockstar has not published an official file size for GTA 6. The PlayStation Store listing doesn’t show one yet, and the Xbox listing shows only a placeholder of a few hundred megabytes, not the real game (GTA Intel’s roundup of the store listings). Most credible estimates land somewhere above 100 GB. To be safe, plan to have at least 150 GB free before pre-loading starts on November 12.

Ignore the viral numbers

You’ve probably seen tables claiming 150, 200 or even 750 GB. None of them come from Rockstar or a store listing. One widely shared figure came from a parody account, and a supposed “GTA 6 download” passed around online turned out to be mostly padding bundled with malware. Until a store lists a size, any exact number is a guess.

A sensible estimate from similar games

GameInstall size (approx.)
GTA V (PS5 version)about 87 GB
Red Dead Redemption 2 (advertised minimum)105 GB
Final Fantasy VII Rebirthabout 145–150 GB

GTA 6 is Rockstar’s biggest game, built only for current consoles, so landing above Red Dead Redemption 2 is a reasonable expectation. The day-one patch adds more on top.

How much space your console really has

Consoles never give you their full advertised capacity, because the system software takes a share.

ConsoleAdvertisedUsable for games (approx.)
PS5 (original)825 GB667 GB
PS5 Slim1 TBabout 842 GB
PS5 Pro2 TBabout 1.89 TB
Xbox Series X1 TB802 GB
Xbox Series S512 GB364 GB
Xbox Series S1 TBabout 800 GB

The 512 GB Xbox Series S is the tightest fit. A game of 150 GB would take up more than 40% of its usable space.

How to check your free space

  • PS5: Settings → Storage → Console Storage. It shows used and free space, and lets you sort games by size.
  • Xbox Series X|S: Settings → System → Storage devices, or press the Xbox button and go to My games & apps → Manage.

The quickest ways to make room

  1. Delete games you’ve finished. Your saves usually stay on the console or in the cloud, and you can redownload games any time.
  2. Clear captures. Video clips add up fast, especially at 4K.
  3. Move older games to a USB drive. Both consoles can store current-generation games on a USB drive, and play older generation games from it, which frees the internal drive.
  4. Add storage if you’re always full. A PS5 takes a standard M.2 SSD; an Xbox uses an official expansion card.

When a store lists the real size, we’ll update this page. For the download itself, see the GTA 6 pre-load guide.
