Xbox Series X|S games can only be played from the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card. A USB drive can store them, but you have to move them back to play. Older Xbox One, Xbox 360 and original Xbox games can play straight from USB. That split decides what to buy (Windows Central’s storage guide).
Usable space by model
| Console | Advertised | Usable for games (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 1 TB | 802 GB |
| Xbox Series X (2 TB models) | 2 TB | about 1.8 TB |
| Xbox Series S | 512 GB | 364 GB |
| Xbox Series S | 1 TB | about 800 GB |
The 512 GB Series S fills fastest. Two or three big modern games can take most of it.
Your two options
| Storage Expansion Card | USB drive | |
|---|---|---|
| Play Series X|S games from it | Yes, same speed as internal | No, storage only |
| Play Xbox One and older games | Yes | Yes |
| Install | Plugs into the slot on the back | Any USB 3 port |
| Cost per GB | Higher | Much lower |
The expansion card uses Xbox’s own storage architecture, so it behaves exactly like the internal drive. Seagate makes the official card, in 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB sizes, and other licensed cards have followed. Look for the official “Designed for Xbox” branding: an ordinary SSD won’t fit the slot.
The smart way to combine them
Many players use both:
- Keep the games you’re playing now on the internal drive or expansion card.
- Move everything else, especially big Series X|S games you’ll come back to, to a cheap USB drive.
- When you want one back, move it from USB to internal. Copying over USB is usually much faster than redownloading it.
To move a game: press the Xbox button, go to My games & apps → Manage, choose a storage device and select Move or copy.
Making room for GTA 6
GTA 6 is a Series X|S game, so it has to be installed on the internal drive or an expansion card to play. Rockstar hasn’t published a file size, but plan for well over 100 GB. Check GTA 6 file size for estimates, and if you’re on PlayStation too, see how to add storage to a PS5.
